Week of prayer for Christian unity 2010

Jerusalem, January 23 - 31
Theme: "You are witnesses of these things"
(Luke 24 : 48).

To honour the one hundredth anniversary of the Edinburgh Mission Conference of 1910, an important stage in the history of the ecumenical movement, the Scottish churches were invited to prepare the 2010 Week of Prayer. In order to deepen spiritually the inseparable link between mission and unity, these churches suggested as theme "You are witnesses of these things" (Lk 24:48). They invite us to follow the whole of chapter 24 of Luke's gospel and to listen to Christ's final discourse before his ascension: "Thus it is written that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things" (Lk 24:46-48). During this week, we pray in particular that the common witness and service of our churches may respond to Jesus' prayer: "As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:21).
