Nazareth & the Galilee
Nazareth and the shores of the Sea of Galilee, roughly 2–3 hours north of Jerusalem, hold the sites of Jesus’ hidden years, His first miracle, and much of His public ministry. Staying overnight in Nazareth or Tiberias lets you split this into two easy days.
| If you have… | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 day | Nazareth’s core sites (Annunciation, St. Joseph’s, the Synagogue Church) plus, if time allows, Cana of Galilee (Day 1 below). |
| 2 days | Day 1 as above, then a full day around the Sea of Galilee: Tabgha, the Primacy of Peter, the Mount of the Beatitudes and Tiberias (Day 2 below). |
Day 1 — The “Yes” That Changed History
Focus: the Annunciation and the childhood of Jesus in Nazareth
Stop 1
The Basilica of the Annunciation
The largest church in the Middle East, built over the Grotto of the Annunciation, where the inscription reads: “Verbum caro HIC factum est” — the Word was made flesh HERE. In the courtyard and upper basilica, international mosaics of the Virgin Mary show how every nation finds a home in her “yes.”
“Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38)
Hours: Lower Basilica (Grotto) approx. 5:45 AM–9 PM; Upper Basilica approx. 8 AM–6 PM — always confirm locally, as hours can change.
Stop 2
St. Joseph’s Church
Steps from the Basilica, traditionally the site of Joseph’s home and carpentry workshop. Descend into the crypt to see ancient grain silos and water cisterns, and reflect on the thirty “hidden” years of ordinary family life that sanctified our own daily routines.
“The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom.” (Luke 2:40)
Stop 3
The Synagogue Church
Tucked into the Old City market, this site marks where Jesus studied and later preached, and was rejected by His own townspeople.
“He went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day.” (Luke 4:16)
Tip: reach it on foot through Nazareth’s lively covered market — a good place to break for lunch.

Stop 4
Cana of Galilee (Kafr Kanna)
A short drive from Nazareth, the Franciscan Wedding Church marks the site of Jesus’ first miracle. Couples are invited to pray here and renew their wedding vows.
“Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs.” (John 2:11)
Getting there: roughly 15 minutes by car, taxi, or local bus from Nazareth — check Moovit for the current route.
Stop 5
Mount Tabor (Basilica of the Transfiguration)
The mountain rising dramatically from the plain, reached via local shuttle vans from the base (private cars are restricted on the summit road). North and south towers honor Moses and Elijah, present with Jesus at the Transfiguration.
“His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.” (Matthew 17:2)
Dress code: strictly enforced — shoulders and knees covered.
Getting there: no public bus reaches the summit; take a taxi to the village of Daburiyya at the base, then a licensed shuttle van up the mountain road.
Day 2 — The Galilee: Miracles by the Sea
Focus: the lakeside miracles and the calling of the disciples
Stop 1
Tabgha — the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fish
At the foot of the Mount of Beatitudes, this church houses the famous 5th-century mosaic of the loaves and fish, a reminder of God’s abundance from very little.
“He gave them to the disciples to set before the people.” (Luke 9:16)
Stop 2
Church of the Primacy of St. Peter
A small Franciscan chapel on the lakeshore, built over the “Mensa Christi” (Table of Christ), where the Risen Christ prepared breakfast for the Apostles and re-commissioned Peter.
“Feed my sheep.” (John 21:17)
Stop 3
The Mount of the Beatitudes
A hillside overlooking the Sea of Galilee, with gardens well suited to silent reflection on Jesus’ core teaching.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

Stop 4
Boat ride on the Sea of Galilee
A traditional wooden boat crossing lets you experience the same silence and openness of the lake where Jesus calmed the storm and walked on the water.
“He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’” (Mark 4:39)
Booking: boats depart from several points on the lake (e.g. near Ginosar/Capernaum); a small fee applies.

Stop 5
Tiberias
Conclude the day in this historic lakeside city. Visit the Church of St. Peter on the promenade, then enjoy a traditional “St. Peter’s Fish” dinner at one of the many restaurants along the waterfront.
The Pilgrim’s Digital Backpack — Galilee Edition
| Feature | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Base camp | Staying in Nazareth (near Mary’s Well) lets you walk to all Day 1 sites; Tiberias is a good base for Day 2. |

| Nazareth Village | A living-history site recreating 1st-century Galilean life — a good complement to the church visits, bookable in advance. |
| Dress code | Modest dress (knees and shoulders covered) is strictly required at the Basilica of the Annunciation and on Mount Tabor. |
